Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed Should be slightly warm, not hot, to activate the yeast.
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast Can substitute with instant yeast.
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar Plus an extra teaspoon for the yeast mixture.
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened For a rich taste.
  • 1 large egg Provides moisture and stability.
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour Essential for roll structure.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Balances flavor.

For Finishing

  • 2 tablespoons melted butter For brushing on top before and after baking.

Instructions

Prepare the Yeast

  • Warm the milk until slightly warm to the touch.
  • Sprinkle the yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar into the warm milk and let sit for 5-10 minutes until bubbly.

Make the Dough

  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt.
  • Add the yeast mixture, softened butter, and egg, and mix until a cohesive dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

First Rise

  • Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Shape the Rolls

  • Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces.
  • Roll each piece into a ball and place them snugly in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.

Second Rise

  • Cover the dish and let the rolls rise until puffy, about 30-45 minutes.

Bake the Rolls

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Brush tops with melted butter and bake for 18-22 minutes until golden brown.

Serve

  • Brush with remaining melted butter after baking, let cool slightly, then serve.

Notes

To prevent mistakes, ensure yeast is activated and ingredients are at the right temperature. You can substitute whole wheat flour for part of the all-purpose flour or use honey instead of sugar for a healthier option.
