Ingredients

For the filling

  • 1 pound Lean Ground Beef or Ground Turkey/Chicken (or plant-based meat for a vegetarian option) This lean protein serves as the hearty base for our filling.
  • 1 packet Taco Seasoning (homemade for lower sodium content optional) Adds aromatic warmth and delightful flavor complexity.
  • 1 cup Shredded Carrot (optional, can be replaced with diced zucchini or omitted) Lends sweetness and orange color to the filling.
  • 1 cup Chopped Bell Pepper or Baby Spinach (optional) Adds fresh crunch and vibrant color.
  • 1 cup Shredded Mexican Cheese (dairy-free alternative for vegan version optional) Enriches the filling with creaminess.

For the hand pies

  • 2 crusts Pie Crusts (defrosted but unbaked, store-bought or homemade) Creates a cozy pocket for the filling.
  • 1 large Egg (for brushing, use non-dairy milk for vegan option) Gives a golden sheen to the hand pies.
  • 1 cup Salsa (for dipping, consider guacamole for an alternative) Adds an extra layer of deliciousness.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, add your Lean Ground Beef or Ground Turkey. Cook until browned.
  • Stir in the Taco Seasoning and any vegetables like shredded carrot or chopped bell pepper. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until softened.
  • Remove from heat and stir in the Shredded Mexican Cheese until melted. Allow to cool for a few minutes.
  • Roll out pie crusts on a floured surface and cut into circular shapes, roughly 4-6 inches in diameter.
  • On one half of each dough circle, place a generous spoonful of taco filling. Avoid overfilling!
  • Brush the edges of the dough with beaten egg (or non-dairy milk for a vegan option) and fold in half, pinching edges to seal.
  • Brush tops with remaining egg wash and make small slits for steam venting.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and flaky.

Serving

  • Serve warm with salsa or guacamole for dipping.

Notes

Seal hand pies properly to avoid leaks. Pre-bake crusts can speed up preparation. Use fresh ingredients for enhanced flavors.
