Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar Sweetens the cookies to perfection.
  • 1 egg Binds the ingredients together.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract Adds warmth and flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract (optional) A delightful touch of nuttiness.

Decorations

  • Pink and orange food coloring For vibrant, cheerful colors.
  • Royal icing for decorations To beautifully adorn your cookies.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Set this mixture aside.
  • In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using) to the butter mixture and mix until combined.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet mixture, stirring until a dough forms without overmixing.
  • Divide the dough into two portions, adding pink food coloring to one and orange to the other.
  • Wrap each portion of dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least an hour until firm.

Baking

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  • Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out shapes and place on the prepared baking sheets.
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes until edges are light golden.
  • Remove from the oven and cool completely on wire racks.

Decoration

  • Decorate the cooled cookies with royal icing and let the icing set.
  • Optionally sprinkle with edible glitter or colored sprinkles.

Notes

Experiment with different flavor extracts like lemon or coconut for a unique twist. Roll out the dough with a light dusting of flour to prevent sticking.
