Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract to the butter mixture and mix until combined.
  • Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, stirring until a dough forms.
  • Divide the dough, adding food coloring to each half.
  • Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least an hour.

Baking

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Roll out the dough and cut out heart shapes.
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes until edges are golden.
  • Cool on racks and decorate with royal icing.

Notes

For an extra layer of flavor, experiment with different extracts. Avoid rushing the refrigeration step to maintain heart shape during baking. Serve with tea, coffee, or hot chocolate, and try adding chocolate chips for extra sweetness.
