Ingredients

For the Cheesesteaks

  • 8 ounces Vegan seitan beef Alternatively, use portobello mushrooms.
  • 1 medium Green bell pepper You can mix in other bell peppers or add spicy varieties.
  • 1 medium Yellow onion Shallots or red onions can serve as substitutes.
  • 2 cloves Minced garlic Garlic powder can be used as an alternative.
  • 2 tablespoons Vegan butter Can substitute with olive oil for a lighter option.
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour Gluten-free flour can be used as a substitute.
  • 1 cup Unsweetened almond milk Any plant milk can be used.
  • 1 cup Vegan provolone Alternatives like vegan Swiss or mozzarella are also suitable.
  • 4 pieces Hoagie rolls Ensure they are vegan.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Begin by preparing your ingredients. Slice the seitan beef, bell pepper, and onion into thin strips. Mince the garlic and set everything aside.

Cooking

  • In a large skillet, melt the vegan butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the sliced onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until they start to soften.
  • Add in the bell pepper and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for an additional 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally until the vegetables are tender and fragrant.
  • Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the sautéed veggies. Stir to coat everything evenly, and cook for another minute to get rid of the raw flour taste.
  • Gradually pour in the unsweetened almond milk, stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Keep stirring until the mixture starts to thicken.
  • Once thickened, fold in the vegan provolone cheese. Stir until the cheese has melted and the mixture is creamy and well-combined.
  • Mix in the sliced seitan beef, allowing it to heat through. Combine everything thoroughly.
  • Lightly toast the hoagie rolls for a few minutes in a separate oven or toaster.
  • Serve the savory filling generously piled into the toasted hoagie rolls and enjoy hot.

Notes

Chop vegetables uniformly for even cooking. Avoid overcooking for the right texture. Season well to enhance flavor.
