Ingredients

For the Onion Rings

  • 2 large large white onions Sweet and aromatic.
  • 8 slices mozzarella cheese Creamy and stretchy, melts beautifully.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Provides a firm base for frying.
  • 2 eggs Beaten to create a binding agent.
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs Panko or plain for extra crunch.
  • 4 cups oil for frying Vegetable or canola oil.

For Dipping

  • 1 cup marinara sauce Tangy and comforting, perfect for dunking.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Cut the ends off the onions, peel, and slice into rings about one centimeter thick. Separate the inner from the outer rings.
  • Cut mozzarella into strips to fill the rings. Place cheese in the center of larger rings and press smaller rings on top. Freeze for about an hour.

Breading

  • Set up a breading station with flour, beaten eggs, and breadcrumbs. Roll each stuffed ring in flour, dip in egg, then coat with breadcrumbs. For extra crispness, double-dip in egg and breadcrumbs and chill again.

Frying

  • Heat oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry onion rings in batches until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Drain on paper towels and serve hot with marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

For an even creamier filling, use fresh mozzarella. Add spices like garlic powder or cayenne pepper to breadcrumbs for an extra kick. Freeze assembled rings longer to keep cheese intact when frying.
